Today's chapter from Proverbs is chapter three. Solomon hits hard on the benefits of seeking wisdom and following the sage advice that wisdom offers. Long life, peace, prosperity are just a few of the things that you will experience if you hold wisdom's teachings close to your heart.
One of the well-known verses from Proverbs is found in verse 5: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart lean not on your own understanding..." The actions being called for in this verse really underscore what it means to follow wisdom. One cannot rely on oneself in order to maneuver through this life. We need to lean on a foundation that will offer us support and strength in times of need and distress. Trusting in the Lord is the key point in this passage.
The chapter continues on describing the potential benefits of following wisdom and learning, along with the pitfalls of what may happen if someone chooses not to follow. The last verse in the chapter says it all: "The wise inherit honor, but fools get only shame." (verse 35)
When all is said and done, the pursuit of wisdom by far outweighs the pursuits that mean nothing in this life. Do we have a hard time with this pursuit? Yeah, I believe we do because we have this notion that we know all that we need to know. We think we can make decisions and choices based on our own understanding. True, there are moments when those decisions or choices may not be negative in their outcomes, but wouldn't it be wiser to lift up those decisions and choices to the Lord, seeking his favor and his leading before we implement them?
Good thoughts from chapter three - hope you are able to catch up today. More in the works ahead!
