In the fourth chapter of Proverbs, Solomon recalls how his own father taught him about the wisdom of making good choices. Verse after verse he lifts up the benefits of seeking and grabbing hold of wisdom. I was especially drawn toward verse 15 "Avoid it; do not go on to it; turn away from it and pass on".
Solomon is talking about the pathway of the wicked. His description of that life choice to walk an evil path is telling... "they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong" and "the way of the wicked is like deep darkness". Throughout the proverbs, Solomon makes comparisons of making wise choices versus the ramifications of making bad ones. He stresses the importance of gaining wisdom and allowing her (he gives wisdom a female personification) to guide and strengthen your daily walk.
It sounds so clear cut - filled with so much common sense. My only question is this: why is it so hard to follow this wise counsel?
Perhaps one answer to that question is that walking a straight path is a choice that we make. We need to keep our focus on the things which are right in front of us - which I understand to signify those things that are right and true. We have to work hard not to deviate from the path and turn our attention to things which are alluring, but undesirable... even unrighteous.
Keep straight. Eyes forward. Don't wander from the right path.
Good advice that needs to be put into practice.
